My journey to find the perfect vintage-style jeans, also known as “mom” jeans, has been quite an adventure filled with ups and downs—mostly downs. It’s been a real quest.
To be honest, my husband isn’t a fan of them and never hesitates to tell me how unflattering they look on me. And to be fair, he’s not completely wrong. Looking back at some of the styles I’ve tried in the past, they were pretty awful.
Finding the right fit for any jeans is tough, but it’s even more challenging when it comes to “mom” jeans. Determined to find the perfect pair, I ordered the Levi’s 501s, which are often sold out. After reading countless reviews and checking Pinterest boards, I thought this style was a must-have.
When they arrived, I was excited. They looked great, except for the waist, which is a common issue I have with most jeans. Feeling confident, I wore them to a casual daytime event paired with a bodysuit. I thought I looked amazing, but my husband still wasn’t convinced.
Not going to lie, it stung a little since I expected him to appreciate the vintage look as much as I did. Still, I decided to stick with my jeans and kept wearing them. But then my daughter gently pointed out that my mom jeans needed some adjusting.
This time, I took a closer look in the mirror, and it turned out both my husband and daughter were right. Normally, I’d give up on a style at this point, but I was determined to make these jeans work for me.
The beauty of “mom” jeans is that they’re super comfortable, and I feel confident in them. However, the oversized waist was ruining the look. So, I took them to a tailor, which is something I should’ve done right away. A week later, I got them back, and the difference was immediate. I couldn’t believe I hadn’t thought of getting them altered sooner.
It also made me realize how much I actually cared about these jeans. I even plan to get the length adjusted next to take them to the next level.
My advice to anyone struggling with jean fit is to get them tailored. It makes all the difference. Pair them with your usual tops, but one trick with this style is to fully or half-tuck in your shirts—it instantly elevates the look.
To accentuate my curves, I like to wear mom jeans with crop tops, bodysuits, or fitted tops. Anything too loose or bulky just doesn’t work for me.
Here are five top styles I love pairing with my mom jeans:
1. Olive + Oak Travis – White Sweater Top
2. Free People Runaway Bodysuit
3. Missguided Cream Horn Button Bodysuit
4. ASOS Design Body Suit
5. Boohoo Twist Front Crop Top
Footwear also plays a key role, depending on how the jeans fit around your legs. I love wearing sneakers with ripped styles and ankle boots with frayed bottoms.
Give your skinny jeans a break this fall and try out mom jeans. Here are five flattering and affordable options:
1. ASOS DESIGN Farleigh High Waist Slim Mom Jeans
2. Free People Mom Jeans
3. Levi’s Wedgie High Rise Jeans
4. ASOS DESIGN Farleigh High Waist
5. Mom Jeans
