Every time we sit down for a movie, one thing we can’t help but notice is the outfits!
Whether they help set the mood or offer some serious fashion inspiration, movie costumes can create memorable moments.
So, let’s take a look back at some of the most iconic movie dresses from the past few decades. There’s nothing quite like seeing a lead character have their ‘Cinderella’ moment on screen, and these dresses certainly fit the bill:
First up is the classic rom-com *How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days*. One of my all-time favorite movie dresses is Kate Hudson’s yellow backless gown. It’s a showstopper, and when Matthew McConaughey’s character sees her in it, you can tell he’s completely captivated.
Recently, I watched *Anyone But You* and was blown away by Sydney Sweeney’s amazing dresses. The pale blue gown Bea wears to her sister’s rehearsal dinner is particularly stunning. The way the sleeves billow in the wind is enchanting, especially when Glen Powell’s character helps her down. It’s a moment to swoon over!
Even though *Atonement* is a heartbreaking film, it’s unforgettable for three reasons: James McAvoy, Keira Knightley, and that incredible green dress. The 1920s style, vibrant green color, and elegant low back make it a standout. It was even named ‘the greatest film costume ever’ by a Sky Movies/InStyle survey.
In *The Princess Diaries*, Mia’s transformation into a princess for Genovia’s Independence Day Ball is a highlight. She dazzles in a gorgeous gown, marking her first real princess moment. It’s a fitting end to her journey.
Julia Roberts’ classic 90s rom-com is full of iconic outfits, but Vivian’s red sweetheart dress, paired with long white gloves, takes the cake. In one of the film’s standout scenes, Edward (played by Richard Gere) gifts her a stunning $250,000 necklace, completing her glamorous look.
The fourth *Harry Potter* film shows Hermione’s grown-up side at the Yule Ball. She makes a memorable entrance in an elegant pink dress. Even though her night ends in tears, thanks to Ron’s jealousy, this dress remains a fan favorite.
Disney princesses are known for their magical dress transformations, and Cinderella’s ball gown is a top favorite. Lily James’ sparkling blue gown from the 2015 adaptation is particularly stunning. Despite Lily saying the dress was “like torture” to wear, it looks incredible on screen.
In *Titanic*, Kate Winslet’s character Rose wows in a dazzling black evening gown. The dress fits the early 1900s perfectly, and we still wish we could wear something like it today. If only we had that famous sapphire necklace to go with it!
Though it’s simpler compared to some others, Emma Stone’s yellow dress from *La La Land* has become a modern favorite. It was heavily featured in the film’s marketing and shines in one of its best musical numbers, ‘A Lovely Night.’ Mia’s monochrome tap shoes might not be the best match, but the joyful dance routine makes up for it.
Every time I watch *The Sound of Music*, I’m drawn to Liesl’s soft pink dress from Maria’s first dinner with the Von Trapps. Liesl doesn’t stay long at the table, sneaking out to meet Rolf. The song ‘Sixteen Going On Seventeen’ gives her dress a chance to sparkle as Rolf dances with her in the garden gazebo. She looks like a floating angel in it!
